A road trip in multiple parts. Part 1: Julian.

In April, we (me and my favorite person other than my son) finally took that roadtrip we’ve been talking about for years. A journey around the different terrains of beautiful California. We wanted to explore the little towns, see the desert, then the mountains and then the coast. We were supposed to drive a hybrid sedan, but the universe conspired to make the trip more rugged and thus we were sent a beautiful 1998 rugged jeep instead. We drove all throughout with the windows down and no music, if you can believe that at all. I rarely ever go anywhere without any music playing but this trip proved to be different. All throughout there was just a lot of talking and laughing and audible gasps (from the beauty, so much beauty). There is something so precious about hearing and feeling and smelling everything with the windows down—it feels so true, the senses get heightened.

The first stop in the trip is a small little town called Julian in the San Diego Country of Southern California. Known for their apple pies and ciders, this was a charming little place that smelled of lilacs and apple blossoms. Two revelations that landed on my life from this particular segment of the trip: apple pie with cheddar cheese on top and hot apple cider! (There are a number of apple pie places here, but my favorite is Julian Pie Company—I regret not having enough belly space to order the apple pie with churros ice cream.) Most places close at 3 PM, so if you are planning to go here, try to get here early, for brunch perhaps.

The mornings are cold and we liked taking walks outside to watch the ducks and the turkeys roam around. It felt like I was in Star’s Hollow (IYKYK) and I like it so much for that. A good starting point for our two week journey.
